Some basic ways to reduce website thievery

Posted in General, Marketing

With more people setting up their own home based, online business every day, the amount of vulnerable web sites is increasing at an alarming pace. And the blame for this lies mostly within the Internet Marketing community itself. Why? Using the powerful techniques of persuasion at their disposal, many so-called Internet Marketing Gurus lure people into setting up their own online business by providing them with ready-made, plug and play web sites that contain basic security flaws. Do not forget that most of these sites are made by marketers, not programmers! And the consequences for you can be disastrous…

One of the most common vulnerabilities – and paradoxically the most easily cured – is to ensure that each directory on your site contains an index file. By default, web browsers, when directed to a directory look first of all for a file named index. This could be followed by a variety of extensions such as .html, .htm, .shtml or .php to name the most common ones.

If the browser does not encounter the index file, it will display the entire directory in the form of a clickable navigation list, disclosing all its contents for the world to see, thus leaving your precious and often restricted content wide open to any type of malicious action.

To prevent this from happening you should make sure that you have at least one or a combination of these following basic security measures in place:

:-     Ensure that each directory contains an index file by renaming the default page you want to be shown to index. Then make sure that all the internal links to that page are updated as well!
:-    Create an empty index file. When arriving at the directory, a blank page will be shown, but you will no longer be displaying a directory listing. You could also provide a message and a clickable link on that page to take your visitors to the correct page.
:-    Create an index file that contains a redirection to the page you want to be shown. There are many free and easily implemented code snippets available that will allow you to do so and your visitors will not even notice that they are being redirected.
:-    If you have downloadable content that people have to pay for, do not keep it it the same directory as the sales page, but keep it in a separate, secure directory and set up your payment processor to that directory. This way you ensure that only people who have paid for the content have access to it.

When selling products online as an Internet Marketer or otherwise, you are more prone to people trying to get to your restricted content so as to avoid having to pay for it. These basic security measures should help you drastically reduce the risk of unlawful access to your site and save you from a lot of headaches and worries.

RSS, what is it and how does it help me?

Posted in General, Marketing

First of all I would just like to say thanks to the one person who has subscribed to my blog through the RSS feed. (Honest it isn’t my mother :-) )
Actually I just noticed that as of today I have two subscribers :-)

I have spoken about RSS feeds before in my article “Just who needs your RSS feed anyway?” and “It’s easy to go from idea to article“, but what I didn’t mention was that RSS saves you time as well. I am subscribed to one site which provides an average of 10 new items a day, I am interested in reading maybe two of those items. So to save time I subscribe to the RSS feed of that site. I can now scan the headlines and click on the interesting ones to read the detail, or tag it for later reading.

I am probably not the best person to explain it so I will just hand over to ProBloggers “Beginners guide to RSS

Marketing lessons from home

Posted in General, Links, Marketing

Wow, I just watched a video on AffiliateWatcher.com. It is part of a post called 5 Lessons a Cape Buffalo Calf Can teach you about Affiliate Marketing. If you are interested in Affiliate marketing at all or even if you just enjoy a good wildlife drama (action) then have a look at the post.

I never thought that as a South African learning these techniques from an American, I never thought that I would be learning something by example from my own country. :-)

One Month Magnate Review

Posted in Articles, General, Marketing, Reviews

Today I would like to review an eBook which is pretty good. If you are interested in seeing how someone can go from losing everything to haveing a profitable internet business up and running in one month, then this book is for you.

Synopsis
In the book, which is called The One Month Magnate, the author, Tony Shepherd, takes you step by step through building a profitable income from the internet. He does not try and con you into thinking you will be rich within a week, he simply states facts and helps you to see where you could also create a profitable web business.

About the Author
Tony Shepherd is one of the UK’s most private Internet Marketers.
Co-owner of Laycock Publishing with marketing guru Sara Brown, Tony has written several books and made his living from the Internet for a number of years.

Tony usually writes under different names and keeps his private life away from work, making sure the latter is kept to a minimum!

About the eBook
The eBook is written under the premise that if the author lost everything except 30 days before he had to pay any debt like a house mortgage, he would be able to have a profitable business in 30 days, and already earned a bit of profit.

I thought the book was written very well and owners of the book will learn some very profitable ways of building an online business. This is all done in a usefull step by step format starting with day one and ending with day 30.

If you are at all interested in earning some extra cash on the side, I recommend this book. Follow the instructions and you will be wishing you had seen it ages ago.

His masters voice

Posted in Bloggerwave, General, Links, Marketing

Remember that company that used to use the dog listening to the record player as their logo? His Masters voice it used to say, I was pretty young then so I don’t have very detailed memories of it, but when I saw this search engine I immediately thought of that. No idea why. The search engine is called masterseek and they are a search engine for specifically finding businesses. Now South Africa sometimes can be said to be in the technological dark ages, but I searched for the company I work for and they showed up in the search results. We even had listings of our smaller branches.

I tried a couple of companies which I thought would never show in an international business search engine and they were in there. If by some strange miracle you find that your company is not featured in the search results, then just hit the “free submit” button and you can submit your companies details for free. I would recommend this as for your results to show up in a search online is very beneficial for any business.

Remember masterseek for all your business searching.

I want my own blog

Posted in General, Links, Marketing

Well I have been blogging now for about 3 months and have started to get questions about how one gets a blog. I went the pay route for my blog, I paid for hosting and registered my own domain name. This is fairly easy and all you have to do is choose your host, upload wordpress and start blogging. :-)
I recommend dreamhost as the have an easy install option for Wordpress where they actually installit for you in ten minutes.

Blogging for free
If you prefer to get a free blog, then you can at blogger.com or wordpress.com.
The following video shows you how to open a blogger.com blog and post your first entry:

Alternately you can get a free blog at wordpress.com:

OK that’s it, I read all my comments so you can ask questions there and I will be glad to help you with them.

Google Fanatic

Posted in Articles, General, Marketing

Well for the past couple of days I have been using the Google Suite with a frenzy. I have been focussing on Google Reader and Google Notebook. In this post I want to give you a quick one or two paragraph description of a few of Google’s programs which I have recently started learning how to use.

Google Notebook
This is such a nice tool for bloggers and article writers on the go. Whereever you have an internet connection you will have your latest notes, ready to put together that killer article for your site. You can create multiple notebooks, and there is even a browser extension which allows you to add notes on the fly from any webpage.

Google Reader
It is still in the Google Labs but I think Google Reader is a vital resource for any respectable internet user. Using Google Reader I subscribe to all the blogs and websites which I really enjoy reading. Google then consolodates all the latest posts into one place where I can read then straight away without actually going from site to site. I even subscribe to my own blog’s comment feed as you see all the comments in one place instead of on each individual post.

The best thing about Google reader is that you can scan articles and easily tag articles for more detailed reading or investigation. This is a huge time saver as I always find myselj being distracted by the internet and ending up so far away from where I started, without a single shred of progress. You can tag articles with multiple tags so organising your subscriptions is a breeze.

Google Analytics
I have mentioned this before but I think that another honourable mension might be in order, and they have just revamped their whole site with new graphs and stats collection.
Google Analytics takes a small piece of code and asks you to place it on your website.
You can see all sorts of stats about who is spending time on your blog, what pages they visit, whether they are new unique visitors or returning visitor, How much time on average do they spend on your site, and key words used to bring them to your site.

There are many more features to Google Analytics, so sign up for free and start playing with it.

Other tools from Google
There are a few other Google tools which are fairly straight forward kind of tools like Excel and Word which are very cool online applications provided for free by Google.
I almost forgot the calendar from google. It is brilliant because your entire calendar is in there. I am trying to find a way to syncronise the google calendar to  my phone but everything I tried didn’t work at all correctly.

Mad Monday Birthdays

Posted in General, Marketing, Monday Madness

No its not my birthday today but Monday Madness is all about birthdays. Here are the questions:

1. Name one thing you received as a gift on your last birthday.
                A photography tripod
2. What would be the “perfect” birthday gift?
                Hmmm good question.
I would like to visit America, but I would settle for photocollege.co.za

3. Do you look forward to birthdays?
Not particularly, everyone makes such a big fuss a normal day :-)
4. On your birthday, do you treat yourself to something special each year?
Not really, there a a small amount of excitement but then I get to work
5. Do you bother keeping up with your horoscope on a regular basis?
No, I do not really see the point of horoscopes.
6. What zodiac sign are you, and do you think you fit the description for that sign?
Scorpio, don’t know what the description is for Scorpio.

Well that’s Monday Madness for today.

I was speaking about StreetCrew yesterday and today I was checking out some of the products on the StreetCrew shop. There are some very cool things there, here is a sampling of some of the products.

Gotta love the tax man

Posted in Bloggerwave, Funny Videos, General, Marketing

Well it is that time of year when I have to say I like the tax man. I got a pretty nice cheque from SARS (South African Revenue Services, not the SARS you are thinking about :-) ) yesterday which will make a nice dent in my house repayments.

I got my first payment from Bloggerwave on yesterday as well so it has been a pretty profitable weekend for me  this weekend. Now I just need to organise a steady stream of income so this blog doesn’t make a dent in my pocket :-)
My domain expires in 8 months so that should give me enough time to get a good stream going.

I am also working on a new project with a couple of friends. We have dubbed it Operation 465 so look out for that coming soon as well.

Well I guess thats it for today, oh almost forgot there is a new blogger in town so if you want to read something good hop on over to Streetcrew.net (The streetcrew blog)

The best video I have seen this week, very funny.

Wacky Wednesday

Posted in Marketing

Today’s theme is going to be wacky wednesday. Only because I have spent the day at work today doing boring Bulk Updates again.

I have just found a website which sells the coolest stuff. Every Wednesday they sell off a product dirt cheap. So I am going to have a look at this weeks product and tell you what I think. If you would like to check out this weeks product then follow this link. I must warn you though, although the product is available for 7 days, the price will increase on an hourly basis.
